"If it's Tuesday, it must be tumblr . . . " Week No. 34 (To Enter OR Not to Enter That IS the Question)

Last Wednesday, I attended an art show of someone who had been one of my teachers when I took classes at Apple's Upper Westside Store. She suggested that I submit certain images that I've taken (re the flowers in my garden) to a photographic competition honoring Georgia O'Keeffe, the prolific painter of flowers.

Although I have many images of flowers on my Pinterest Boards, I have also featured flower photo-ops here on Blogger, as well as in my entries on TLLG's Facebook Page, and tumblr posts, my former instructor's suggestion prompted me to view the flowers that are still remaining (it's fall so the number of flowers dwindles) in my urban (NYC) garden in a different manner, as evidenced by the image posted above, which I took this past weekend. This image features the very expressive Black and Blue Salvia which is still thriving in my garden.

While I'm flattered about the recommendation of my former instructor, I am not sure if I will enter the competition, as the entry fee is out of my reach momentarily, but I will see what happens as the deadline to enter it approaches.

“God loved the birds and invented trees. Man loved the birds and invented cages.”

The sweet cardinal who visits my garden usually sits in "her" perch in a tree in my neighborhood, where she often sounds like a telegraph machine, perhaps she's up there texting her birdie comrades, as to if I've put out any food for them to nosh on. Today in between her "tick-tick-tick" sounds, she was quoting Jacques Deval who is known for saying, "God loved the birds and invented trees. Man loved the birds and invented cages." I think she may have actually picked up this quote from reading my blog, for this past December, here on Blogger, I made reference to Deval, in relation to his quote about flowers and vases; if you'd like to refer to my entry regarding this, please click here.

I have good reason to believe she spends a lot of time gazing at the computer, for she has a bird's eye view into my window, and the minute, and I do mean minute, I turn on my lights in the morning, she begins her "tick-tick-tick" texting to let other birds know that I am awake and will be putting out food for them!

The image posted above today's blog entry may look familiar to you dear reader, as I posted it above an entry that I made here on Blogger on July 30, 2011, when my sister came to visit me for her annual vacation. As it happens, she has returned again (last evening) to put up with me and all my idiosyncrasies and my posting in cyberspace may be minimal during her stay. However, since today is Tuesday, which means, it must be tumblr, I'll still "send" you there, dear reader, for there is a lot of content to be had. an UPDATE

Since the beginning of the new year, The Last Leaf Gardener here on blogger has taken a few pauses here and there for various reasons. One was a major computer upset when the mother board to my computer crashed (disrupting my work flow this past March and April) which was discussed by one of my Kauffmaniana tulips in an entry that you may refer to by clicking here.

Another reason for pauses within TLLG's "normal" Blogger schedule is that my content is now being divided between here and nybg's (New York Botanical Gardens) tumblr on a more regular basis. Followers of this blog will know that each Tuesday I have dedicated to "if it's Tuesday it must be tumblr," and I have included links to lead folks to content posted there. Having found that tumblr is a much better venue for visuals, I have been posting more content there, thus having to rethink what the plan is for TLLG on Blogger; in other words, I have been pausing for station identification and appreciate your bearing with me as I sort this out.

April (and now May) Showers Take Away Flowers!

During a weather broadcast yesterday, May 8th 2012, the meteorologist pointed out that out of the first eight days of May, it has rained for six of them! Today is the ninth of May, and it's raining again. Moreover, it has rained heavily almost every day since April 21st 2012! Admittedly, it has not quite been the "40 days and 40 nights" of Noah's Ark, and, admittedly, the rain is very good for our reservoirs, but to some extent, all this rainfall has caused some angst amongst the things I grow in my urban (NYC) terrace garden, hence (since this blog is mostly about life in my garden) my lack of regularity in posting here on TLLG (although you can always find me on nybg's — New York Botanical Gardens — tumblr, Pinterest, and my Facebook Page for The Last Leaf Gardener).

Yesterday morning, Juan V came over to work in my urban (NYC) terrace garden with me, and fortunately we accomplished what we needed to do there before heavy rainfall began again. He was even able to do an "aerial" photo-op for me which is posted above, and, from the look of things, you might surmise that all is lush and thriving, and you may even find yourself wondering, what the hell is TLLG talking about re garden angst!

I am veerring off the garden path from my "usual" topic of gardening to share the following: 

Once upon a time, in the late 1980s, there was a movie called "Norma Rae," which starred Sally Field. Ultimately, SF received an Oscar for her performance in the film, and in her Academy Award speech, she proclaimed, "You like me! You like me!"

SF's speech became the "fuel" for many sitcoms including "Kate and Allie," where yours truly portrayed a sweat shop worker in an episode that made fun of SF's Norma Rae and subsequent, "You like me" reference.
