In the spring, becomes the geranium....

This picture is taken in a garden that is in an apartment building in NYC. The container has been wrapped in burlap for the winter and part of this material is visible in the image, as is the brick wall behind it. The focus of the image is a couple of pink colored geraniums who are poking their heads up through the mulch (which has been placed on the plant to protect the flora from winter temperatures. A few of the geranium’s green leaves are also poking up through the mulch. Garden winterizing is discussed in volume two of my three volume book series, “Words In Our Beak.” Information re these books can be found within another post on this blog @ https://www.thelastleafgardener.com/2018/10/one-sheet-book-series-info.html

When I am in my garden on a cold January day and notice few geraniums who are poking their heads through the mulch (as that flower type is doing in the photo directly above) that was put there to protect them during a cold winter days, I think of some lines from a The Rose, a song written by Amanda McBroome

Her song was made popular by Bette Midler and the lyrics I'm thinking of go like this, "...just remember in the winter, far beneath the bitter snow, lies the seed that with the sun's love, in the spring becomes the rose."

In this instance, my geraniums weren't lying beneath the bitter snow (although they were doing that last month), they are lying beneath layers of mulch put in their container when iI did my annual garden winterizing ritual. Garden winterizing is a task I've done for over ten years. My flora has truly rewarded me by flourishing and this includes my geraniums that I've had for years and who can be seen during warmer times in the next picture.

Everything is in full bloom. The garden is the setting for my three volume book series, “Words In Our Beak.” Information re these books can be found within another post on this blog @ https://www.thelastleafgardener.com/2018/10/one-sheet-book-series-info.html

This process is well worth the effort and the procedure of doing and it is included in volume two...

This picture features the front cover of volume two of my book series, "Words In Our Beak." It shows a female cardinal atop a brown colored metal saucer on a stand in my garden. Green foliage can be seen in the background. She appears to be looking straight into the camera and is most likely at ease because her crest is down. Info re this volume is in a press release that can be read via another post on this blog @ https://www.thelastleafgardener.com/p/blog-page_10.html

The goal of these books is to open readers to a simple understanding of the winged world and their environment. Set in a rooftop urban garden (mine) in New York City, my story is told in the voice of Cam, a female cardinal, who visits it. Words In Our Beak is directed to children and adults who are curious about birds, as well as gardens and want to learn about them from a unique perspective.

Protecting flora is not the only thing to be gained by winterizing, a number of bird types  have taken advantage of the materials used in the process as a way of keeping warm (as you may surmise from the following photo-ops of American robins  (who are included in volume three of my series)...

This picture was taken in a NYC rooftop garden during winter so the containers have been wrapped in burlap for protection from cold temperatures. The focus of the image is a robin who is standing on mulch (something that protects flora in winter) and appears to be looking up to her right at something unbeknownst to me. The bird’s yellow beak is closed. She is “puffed up” which what birds do to keep warm. The garden is the setting for my three volume book series, “Words In Our Beak.” Robins are featured in the third volume. ... and Mourning doves (who are featured in volume one of my book series) spending time in my winterized containers.

This picture was taken on a snowy day in a NYC rooftop garden during winter so the containers have been wrapped in burlap for protection from cold temperatures. Snow is falling and one can see it has accumulated. Since birding as well as gardening have grown more popular during the coronavirus (due to consequences of lockdowns) these books are great to have on hand for those who can't go out and about. Moreover, you might want to consider giving my book series as a gift for Valentine's Day, a holiday which will be here in less than one month.

And if you want to send a Valentine's Day card to your true love, I have a number of bird-themed ones, including a couple of selections that feature Mourning doves as seen below.
