Saturday's Sentiment Birds Watching

As you can see, The Mutts comic strip seen directly above, is created by Patrick McDonnell, whose strips have been discussed in many of my blog posts.

In fact, I've referenced this particular one in prior entries and it came to my mind again today as I was culling  photos that I've taken in bygone years in order to prepare for a new opportunity.

One of the sets that I've been going through are pictures I took of Mac ("my" visiting male cardinal) and a few of them can be seen directly below.

Years ago (2014) when I took these images, I had wondered what the people who live in the apartment of the window he was looking into were offering him; for as you can see, he seems to be watching them in the same manner that McDonnell's bird is watching a man in the comic strip I've included here.

Later as I began studying the behaviors of birds, I learned that the cardinal seen here was most likely not looking at the people through that window, rather he was looking at himself; only he didn't realize  that's what he was seeing; which he likely presumed was another bird, in fact he likely assumed the bird he was seeing was a competitor...

... as he seemed to be fighting with his reflection.

This behavior is something I discuss in my speaking engagements (presentations) as well as in volume one my book series, Words In Our Beak.

Btw, the books make a great Valentine's Day gift, a holiday that is now five days from today!

Additionally, I have created a line of greeting cards that include pairs of cardinals that are perfect to use as a valentine! Pictures of them can be seen directly below....

.... and these cards as well as others are available via Fine Art America.
