MOURNING DOVES ARE FEATURED IN WIOB |
The other evening after the sun went down, I noticed at least seven mourning doves sitting in my rooftop garden. Due to their coloring and the darkness of the sky, they nearly blended in with the blacktop surface; so it was hard to observe their behavior and impossible (given the constraints of my camera equipment) to photograph them.
I have published a number of posts including ones within this blog re mourning doves and they are featured in my book series, Words In Our Beak (AKA WIOB) ...

... so I know quite a bit about them.
Still whenever I see these doves, I usually google them to see if I can learn anything new; and the other evening was no exception. The information I came upon contained facts that I've already documented in blog posts and/or my books.
However, I did come upon an article titled, What Does it Mean When a Grey Dove Visits You? Mourning Dove Symbolism. The author whose name is not credited in the publication (Digest From Experts) begins by stating, "Grey Doves are also called Mourning Doves. They are commonly found worldwide and so it is not unusual to wonder what it may mean when you encounter a Grey Dove."
He/she goes on to say, "Take a cue from what the birds are doing when they visit you."
This prompted me to include the "illustration" atop this entry where I will share a few of the ideas mentioned in the article, as well as some of my photo-ops of recent daytime visits (by mourning doves) to my garden.
The first thoughts this writer expresssed re these birds have to do with friendship, stating "Because of their social nature, Mourning Doves or Grey Doves are associated with friendship and companionship. When you are visited by a Grey Dove it could mean your social life is about to take off."I am not sure how much my non-existent social life can "take off" given the restrictions of the coronavirus pandemic so I did not associate my recent visit by mourning doves with a sign that I could soon be socially active.
Rather, I took the visit as a sign that I should keep my bird feeder filled and my bird bath clean (as evidenced in the next two pictures).MOURNING DOVES ARE FEATURED IN WIOB |

Another thought the writer has regarding friendship and of seeing a mourning doves sugggests "when you encounter a pair or group of Grey Doves, the number of birds and their activity can be part of the message they bear. For instance, amorous behavior can portend a romance blossoming from a friendship."
A pair of mourning doves who visited me the other day...

However in bygone years they were more amorous and while their love life did not bring about one for me, their actions did prompt me to create note-cards (which can be seen below)...

Just a quick reminder, Valentine's Day is less than one month away, so if you would like to get these items or my book series for your true love, consider acting quickly to avoid delays caused by shipping.
And another reminder, continue to take a cue when you keep your eye on the birdie, especially mourning doves, you never know what they may teach you.
