MY ROOFTOP GARDEN IS THE SETTING FOR WIOB |
Welcome to my one hundred and ninety-ninth segment of Tuesday's Truths series; which I am offering on another day of a second July 2020 heat wave taking place in NYC.
Even in the the southwest corner of my garden where temperatures are at their most coolest it was stiflingly hot, the temps were nearly one hundred degrees, as evidenced in the photo posted directly above which features a thermometer that hangs in that area.
The "real feel " temperatures were much higher, so conditions were most oppressive for my visiting birds.
Many avian varieties usually indicate they are struggling with the heat by keeping their beak open, as an American robin visiting my place during the heat this afternoon did when he/she sought refuge from the heat atop one of my urban hedges; as seen in the first image of the next sequence of photo-ops.

Another American robin cooled off by alighting on a container of pebbles as evidenced in the image below.

A visiting pigeon seemed more tolerant of the temps as you might surmise from the next picture.
ROBINS AND PIGEONS ARE FEATURED IN WIOB |
As of this blog post I am not certain if pigeons are more heat tolerant than other NYC songbirds, but if I find the answer, I'll add an addendum to this entry (so do stay tuned).
Meanwhile, dear reader, you can learn more about both of these bird types via my three volume book series, Words In Our Beak (WIOB).
