I'll start with today and go backwards. Today, January the 25th, is the birthdate of #VirginaWoolf, and I posted the following image as a way of honoring the title of one of her books, To The Lighthouse. And I made another Virginia Woolf reference, which was to a quote attributed to her: "One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well."
Moreover, I added that "this past Saturday, 1-23-16, during the jonasblizzardnyc, an array of birds visiting my garden heeded Woolf's philosophy!"
They did not let the heavy and fast accumulating snowfall deter them from dining well, as evidenced by the pictures included with this entry that feature a blue jay, a common grackle and a downy woodpecker noshing during the snowstorm.
"#jonasblizzard #jonas2016 #jonasnyc By this time, close to midnight on Saturday, 1-23-16, most people know that 26.8 inches of snow fell in Central Park during the blizzard that has been named Jonas. Since I live near to Central Park, that is the amount of snowfall that probably fell in my garden.
"I spent the entire day taking photos of the birds that visited me during the blizzard and I will post them — with stories — in the coming days.
The snow fell fast and furious and accumulated very quickly, but this did not deter the birds from visiting my garden! One of my favorites, the dark-eyed juncoes, returned after an absence and I was so grateful see them.
"For as you may recall from a recent entry here on TLLG's Facebook Page, (@ http://on.fb.me/1QlNUuy), I was concerned as to why they hadn't been visiting.
Other bird types that I saw here today include Mac (Cam's husband), blue jays, common grackles, European starlings, house finches, house sparrows, pigeons, and a lone downy woodpecker.
The first image in tonight's entry is of that downy woodpecker availing himself of butter-bud-suet. I have better photo-ops of him doing this, which I plan to share with you in the coming days.
"But I chose this one to include tonight to give you a sense of the impact of the snow on "his" feeder.
Pictures two through four are included to give you sense of how fast the snow accumulated.
Picture two was taken at 9:30 AM 1-23-15, picture three was taken at 3:46 PM 1-23-15, and picture four was taken at 7:00PM on 1-23-15. How did Jonas impact the area where you live, dear reader?" In that particular post, the following images were included:
