Making and Breaking New Years Resolutions (Plus the 2011 Posting Schedule for The Last Leaf Gardener)

As of this morning, January the Seventh, I am finally presenting my 2011 posting schedule in accordance with one —the only one — of my New Year's resolutions. It's not that I don't have resolutions to make. I have weight to lose, bills to pay, a temper to monitor, faith that feels watered down and needs building up, and the habit of swearing that needs to be stopped immediately.
All of these things are important to address, whether it is through a New Year's Resolution or offered up during Lent. However, if truth be known, I do not usually give up something for Lent; rather, I take on performing an act of charity. As far as New Year's resolutions go, I am also certain that there are people in my life who would have a litany of things that they'd like me to resolve to change; but thankfully, we cannot impose New Year's resolutions for others, in spite of the sentiment raised in Dilbert (as seen in the comic strip posted above this entry). While it is true that if I kept a swear jar, and (if I had money to spare) put money in it each time I swore, I might have money to pay outstanding bills, giving up swearing, is not a resolution that I have been able to maintain.

Were I to have given up swearing for the 2011 New Year, and then had subsequently stubbed my toe on the first day of this new year, and responded by swearing, I would feel panged by the breaking of this resolution. For the next 364 days, I might even berate myself for not keeping a promise — better to not have another reason to berate myself. Therefore, in my older age, I try and make New Year's resolutions that I can stick to and then work on the other things one day at a time.

For me, a  2011 resolution that I know I can stick to, is maintaining my blog. Now, as promised in an earlier post, here is the 2011 posting schedule for The Last Leaf Gardener. This is my last daily entry before my schedule commences which is this: beginning on Tuesday, the eleventh of January 2011, I will maintain a posting schedule of Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday three o'clock in the afternoon, with the exception of Saturday January the 29th (when I will be changing my blog's layout). Additionally, I may post on an 'off-schedule' day in the event of a special event. Please note there will be no posting from Thursday, April 21st, 2011 through Sunday April 24th 2011, as I will try to observe the holidays.

  1. I just read your January 7th posting on new year resolutions and loved it. I too have many things I should give up (biting finger nails and chocolate) and I do try and for periods do succeed. But, like you I think a better resolution is to do more for others, be kinder, be more patient, listen more etc... rather than give something up. Of course nothing stops me from doing both. I like your resolution to maintain your blog and I enjoyed your January 6th posting on the three kings parade in East Harlem. I never heard of it and now hope one year to see it. All the best to you in 2011.
